Ironbirds Rebound in Battle of the Birds

Wednesday June 1st the Ingersoll Ironbirds hosted last year's League Champs the St. Thomas Cardinals.  A tightly contested match after three innings found the Ironbirds trailing 5-3.  The fourth inning the Cardinals exploded for seven runs, but the Ironbirds pushed back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own to bring the score to 12-7 after five.  In the sixth inning the Cardinal bats caught fire again throwing up another seven runs to bring the final score to 19-7.  Leading the offensive charge for the Ironbirds were Sam House, Westin Matsumoto, Brandon Plaquet and Declan Minielly with three hits apiece.
The following Tuesday the Ironbirds travelled to St. Thomas looking to seek revenge.  In the top half of the first inning Ingersoll put three runs after Charlie Ashman hit a two run double to cash Colton Macpherson and Matsumoto.  Cumberland lined an off field single to cash Ashman in for the third run.  St. Thomas scored a solo run in their bottom half to cut into the 3-1 Ironbird lead.  in the top half of the fourth inning the Ironbirds offense exploded for six runs behind Owen Vanderbaan's base clearing double, and Ashman's base clearing double!  In the top half of the 5th inning Ingersoll scored four more runs behind back to back singles by House and Macpherson.  Needing three outs in the bottom half of the 5th inning to secure the win the Ironbird defense was rock solid as it completed back to back three up three down innings secure the 14-2 mercy victory.
The defensive player of the game was shortstop Nathan Kapitor who completed nine put outs in the game without any errors.  Offensive players of the game were Owen Vanderbaan and Charlie Ashman who cashed in nine RBI's between them.
Next up for the Ironbirds is the Dorchester Diamondbacks on Sunday night in Dorchester at 6:00pm
